ArtPrize Nine kicks off

WZZM-TV and AP • Sep 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM

GRAND RAPIDS — ArtPrize Nine officially kicked off at noon Wednesday.

This year’s competition features 1,300 pieces of art on display at 179 venues, and runs through Oct. 8.

In all, $500,000 in cash prizes will be awarded — including $200,000 for the public favorite and $200,000 for a winner picked by an expert jury.

The first round of voting began Wednesday. Every entry at every venue is in the running for prizes.

The first round narrows entries down to 20 chosen by the public and 20 by the jury. The second round's rules will change, removing the distinction between the public and jury choices. Twenty from each group will compete with each other in one pool rather than two.

You can vote by downloading the ArtPrize app, or going online to the ArtPrize website. You can vote as many times as you want.

The winners will be announced Oct. 6.

ArtPrize is more than viewing creations — there are multiple hands-on experiences through the ArtPrize Labs Studio, at the HUB/HQ and Rosa Parks Circle. Steam Village also provides unique learning experiences at the HUB.

The ArtPrize website features an alphabetical list of venues, the number of pieces, their locations and their hours.
