Walk for hunger planned for Sunday

SPRING LAKE — Organizers of this year’s walk for hunger hope to exceed the $55,000 raised locally last year.

The 43rd annual Tri-Cities C.R.O.P. Hunger Walk will take place Sunday afternoon at the Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, 365 S. Lake Ave. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m. Participants can choose from a 1-mile or 3-mile course.

Committee member Tracy Wood said any walker who donates or raises $100 or more will be matched with a $50 gift as part of an incentive challenge.

Anybody who wants to participate can just show up at the registration site, she said.

Last year, 230 walkers participated in the event.

“We’re hoping to have 300 this year,” Wood said.

Walkers will gather at the Spring Lake church for a poverty-level meal of a thin broth soup. A prayer will be said prior to the walk.

The general route is up Lake Avenue to Exchange Street, west into Spring Lake Village, and east on Savidge Street before heading back to the church.

Wood said that 25 percent of the money raised stays local and is donated to The Salvation Army, The People Center and Love in Action for use in their food pantries and other ministries.

The other 75 percent is donated to Church World Service for things like disaster relief and refugee service. Wood said Church World Service recently donated more than 100,000 5-gallon buckets full of cleaning supplies for relief efforts in Texas and Florida.

More information on the local walk, including how to make a donation, can be found online at www.crophungerwalk.org/grandhavenmi.

What does C.R.O.P. mean?

When it began in 1947 (under the wing of Church World Service, which was founded in 1946), C.R.O.P. was an acronym for the Christian Rural Overseas Program. Its primary mission was to help Midwest farm families to share their grain with hungry neighbors in post-World War II Europe and Asia.

Today, CWS says it has outgrown the acronym but retained it as the historic name of the program.
