After finishing 12th overall at the MHSAA Division 2 state championship cross country meet this year, the land-lubing Lakers have earned yet another honor.

The Spring Lake boys cross country team has been awarded Academic All-State honors for 2016. In order to be recognized, a team must finish in the top half of their state meet and exceed expectations in the classroom.

The boys finished with an average grade point average of 3.8876, good for the fourth-highest spot in the state among Division 2 schools.

The state-qualifying team of Matthew Schmidt, Joe Negen, Cam Thalhammer, Henok Ghirmay, Andrew Hylen, Ben Hylen and Matthew VanderWall earned their stripes on and off the course this year.

“I am incredibly proud,” Spring Lake boys cross country coach Jen Gwinnup said of the accomplishment. “It proves that our runners are performing at a high level in and our of the classroom.”

Just two of those scholar-athletes will graduate at the end of this school year, leaving the Lakers plenty of firepower saved up for next years’ state meet and the 2017-18 academic year.
