Five laid-off Spring Lake teachers recalled

The school district was able to call back five teachers for all or part of their schedules because two teachers retired and another switched to a part-time schedule, Furton said.
An additional $221,000 from the state in one-time funds helped as well, Furton said. The money is intended to offset an increase in the rate the district must pay into the state retirement fund.
“When we planned our layoffs, we didn’t know anything about the aid that we would get from the state that would offset retirement costs,” Furton said.
The district typically approves more layoffs than it will need to “give itself room to move,” he said.
