The national prize was recently presented to Thelen by VFW officials for the organization’s annual Voice of Democracy/Patriot Pen contest.

All together, the homework assignment from Michelle Morrisey’s class earned Thelen prizes totaling $6,200.

This September, the VFW will again offer students a chance to participate in the Voice of Democracy for high school students and the Patriot Pen essay contest for middle school students. This year’s subject or theme for Voice of Democracy is: “Is there pride in serving in the military?” The subject or theme for Patriot Pen is: “Are you proud of your country?”
