Fried foods to be eliminated from GHHS

“The nutritional standards are changing and we need to keep up with those standards,” she said. “But now, we’re cutting out all fried food.”

The new conveyer oven will cook pizzas, flatbreads, grilled sandwiches and other foods —according to Mary Darnton, the high school’s food service director.

“We got rid of all of our deep-fat fryers — we’ve removed them completely from the school,” Darnton said, adding that any food that was previously fried will now be baked.

The Grand Haven school board voted 6-1 Monday to amend the school’s food service contract with its food service contractor, Chartwells.

Trustee Jennifer Williams cast the opposing vote because it is not a “wise use” of money right now, she said this morning.
