Proposal would pull schools out of union business

“I’ve heard from many teachers and school districts about the inappropriateness of schools writing a check to the union,” said Meekhof, R-West Olive. “Disputes between unions and union members have no place in our public schools, so it is best schools no longer serve a role in the middle of the dispute. Michigan schools should not be forced to do the union’s work for them.”

Currently, union dues are deducted from teachers’ paychecks by school districts and then sent on to the Michigan Education Association, the state teachers union.

“These bills allow schools to remain neutral in any labor dispute concerning outside parties,” said Haveman, R-Holland. “Schools should not also have to carry the burden of administrative work for an outside labor group. They have their plates full enough educating our children.”
