WMAAA Director Travis Thomsen said there was a sprinkler malfunction in the art room Thursday night and water spilled into the hallways. There was no fire at the school, and officials are still “speculating as to the cause,” Thomsen said in a letter that was posted to parents on Sunday.

Ten classrooms and six other rooms, primarily along the Ferrysburg school’s main hallway, were impacted, Thomsen said. This includes the fourth- and fifth-grade wing, art room, and music room.

A damage restoration service began removing water on Friday and continued working through the weekend, Thomsen said.

“They indicated that the school should be safely habitable by students on Tuesday, because they need to complete the water removal process and spray antimicrobial solutions to prevent mold growth,” he said.

Teachers will still need to assess the damage to their rooms and have time to put them back together, “as the water did quite a bit of damage,” Thomsen said.

Because of that, school was canceled for today. Classes will resume Tuesday, Thomsen said.
