GHAPS to purchase 2nd special-needs bus

The school board on Monday unanimously approved the $86,270 purchase from Hoekstra Transportation. The bus will be equipped with a lift.

The Hoekstra bid was the lowest of three bids the district received for the bus, school officials said.

GHAPS Director of Transportation Rod Jonas said they were planning to purchase the bus next school year, but moved the purchase to this year because of an immediate need.

“We need it now so we can have enough buses to go around,” Jonas said Tuesday. “If any of them break down, we wouldn’t have any (special-needs) busses.”

The new bus will hold about 25 students with two to three wheelchairs — the same as the other buses, Jonas said.

Jonas said they plan to order the bus immediately and hope to have it for use, when needed, by the time students return from Christmas break.
