Snyder's office said in a statement Thursday that Don Weatherspoon will lead the beleaguered West Michigan school district. Snyder based his decision on a state review team's recommendation, and declared a financial emergency last week.

Weatherspoon has served as administrative commissioner for the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and held various leadership roles with the state's departments of corrections and education. He was an adjunct associate professor for criminal justice at Michigan State University.

He starts Monday in Muskegon Heights.

The Muskegon Heights review process started after the district's school board voted in December 2011 to seek an emergency manager. The 1,400-student district's general fund deficit was about $8.5 million in June.
