New review system for SL teachers

The school board on Monday unanimously approved the new review format, as well as hiring four food service employees to replace those who left the district.

Superintendent Dennis Furton said they worked with the Spring Lake Education Association, the local teachers union, to consider the changes. As they looked at the old system, he said they found challenges because it was a “one-size-fits-all” approach, and it didn’t leave room to change for specific needs.

The previous observation system gave a principal reviewing the teacher a glimpse at how the teacher taught a particular lesson. Now, the principal will hold one or two unscheduled informal observations, and provide concrete ideas of what is considered highly effective teaching for formal observations, Furton said.

Spring Lake Education Association President Laurie Draeger thanked the school board for working together with the union in developing the new evaluation system. She said teachers had direct input, and they are now comfortable with the evaluation format.

“We think it’s a much more authentic evaluation tool,” Draeger said.
