SL ponders elementary changes

Superintendent Dennis Furton has laid out a plan for the Spring Lake school board to consider a potential building reconfiguration for the district's two elementary schools. If the plan is approved, one of them would become an upper elementary school and the other would host the lower elementary grades.

Furton’s plan includes forming a committee of board members, staff, parents and administrators to look at the benefits and drawbacks.

Although it has been discussed before, Furton said the committee would provide a definitive answer as to whether or not reconfiguring the buildings would be beneficial for the district and its students. The topic keeps popping up in administrative discussions, he said.

“At this point, it’s purely a discussion,” Furton said.

In presenting his plan to the school board Monday night, Furton stressed three points: it’s important, it’s complex, and he wants to delay judgment until all the information is presented.
