Fundraising to Europe

Following the concert, the choir and orchestra will continue on to tour Germany and Austria.

The group received the invitation from Dr. Craig Arnold, founder and general manager of Manhattan Concert Productions.

“It’s an incredible honor,” said choir director Shirley Lemon.

Orchestra director Melissa Meyers said she’s excited to experience the opportunity alongside her students.

“It’s a musician's dream in life,” she said. “The Mecca for us is playing in Carnegie Hall.”

So far, about 123 students and parents have signed up for the trip. While students are not required to participate, Lemon said she hopes they have enough to represent the Grand Haven High School music department.

Since receiving the invitation on June 4, students and parents started fundraising for the trip that will cost about $3,200 per participant.

Throughout the summer, they held fundraisers such as car washes and parking cars. Lemon said the group has raised a total of about $15,000.

“The kids have been working hard this summer,” she said.

During the school year, the students will raise money through fundraisers such as a poinsettia sale, a German/Austria-themed dinner, and a percentage of sales on select days from some area restaurants.
