‘Gazelle’ wins spelling bee for GH student

Fourth- through eighth-grade students from local schools competed in the Bee, including students from Vanderbilt Charter Academy, Eagle Crest Charter Academy, West Ottawa Public Schools, Corpus Christi Catholic School, Grand Haven Area Public Schools, Grand Haven Christian School, South Olive Christian School and West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics.

The winner was eighth-grader Will Cotter from Grand Haven's Lakeshore Middle School. He won on the word "gazelle."

Rebecca TerHaar, a sixth-grade student from Grand Haven Christian School, took second place.

Also participating in the regional Spelling Bee were many Ottawa County students including local students: Aliyah Austin, an eighth-grader at Lakeshore Middle School; Peyton Brill and Emerson Rosenberg, fourth-graders at Peach Plains Elementary; Ashton Voorhees, sixth-grader, and George Fullerton, fifth-grader, from White Pines Middle School; Alyssa Koetje, a seventh-grader at Grand Haven Christian School; Jonah Schmuker, sixth-grader, and Camden “Cami” Workinger, fifth-grader, at West Michigan Academy of Arts & Academics.

Cotter will move on to compete in the Greater Grand Rapids Spelling Bee on March 12.
