Out of the top 75 high schools in Michigan listed in the new report, Ottawa County has five schools represented. They are: Spring Lake (10), Grand Haven (22), Zeeland West (23), West Ottawa (29) and Holland (32).
The magazine ranks high schools nationally and by state based on their student-to-teacher ratio, college readiness of students, and math and reading proficiency scores.
Spring Lake High School is listed 641st in the nation and Grand Haven is at 897.
Last year, Spring Lake ranked eighth in the state and Grand Haven was 26th.
Spring Lake High School Principal Mike Gilchrist said the school has been on the list for all eight years the rankings have been made. He said the recognition stems from the contributions of all district employees and local residents.
“It’s a community award,” he said.
Grand Haven High School Principal Tracy Wilson said the recognition shows the hard work and importance the district places on academics. Unlike sporting accolades, she said this award considers student population, individual students and socio-economic factors.
“It just shows the efforts our staff, students and community place on excellence,” Wilson said. “It’s exciting to be recognized for the academic efforts you’re putting in.”
