Spring Lake District Library also has a variety of early literacy opportunities for families with preschool-age children.
New this September is Baby Bounce Storytime for babies who are not yet walking and their caregivers. This event will take place on Tuesday mornings from 10:45-11:30 a.m., beginning on Sept. 12.
Stories, bounces, rhymes and music will all be included in the fun.
Sept. 12 is also the start date for Little Movers Storytime. Designed for toddlers and older babies who are more mobile, Little Movers will meet on Tuesday mornings from 9:45-10:30 a.m. Participants will enjoy books, songs and movement activities chosen especially for toddlers. Children and their caregivers will also have time to socialize and play with the library’s toy collection.
Play ‘n Learn, the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District's early literacy playgroup, will meet at the library the second and third Wednesday of each month during the school year. Check the library’s website, http://sllib.org, for dates and times. Each session is based on a children’s book and includes crafts, finger plays, activities and a snack.
Every family receives a free book to take home. Information about child development and reading readiness is available for parents.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is another way for parents to introduce their youngest children to the joy of books and reading. Participating families will receive a log book and a tote bag when they sign up at the Youth Services desk. For every 100 books read on the way to the goal of 1,000, children may choose a book to add to their home library.
Those who reach 1,000 books will join the library’s wall of fame. Parents who participate in the program will log the books they share with their child – or that he or she enjoys with other loved ones, at preschool or daycare, or even during library storytimes.
For more information about additional youth activities and resources, call the library at 616-846-5770, ext. 1341. The library is located at 123 E. Exchange St., Spring Lake.
