More than 50 students from Fruitport Community Schools will present the musical “Grease” at 7 p.m. Friday, March 23; and 1:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 24.
Tickets are on sale now through March 23 at the Fruitport High School office. Pre-sale tickets are $8 each, or four for $30. Tickets at the door are $10.
After a few years of performing shows geared mostly toward younger audiences, director Cindy Curtis said they wanted to switch and perform a production for a different audience.
With the Fox television network’s production of “Grease Live” in 2016, Curtis said there’s a new generation of Pink Ladies and T-Birds fans. While the musical production differs from the movie, Curtis said there are many of the same qualities and parts.
Families can meet “Grease” Pink Ladies and T-Birds during a lunch and carnival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, March 17, in the middle school’s cafeteria. Tickets for the carnival are $5 before March 16 in the Fruitport High School office, or $7 at the door. There will be hot dogs and gluten-free buns available, games, crafts, raffles, a hula-hoop contest, photo booth, and bounce house. Children are encouraged to dress in 1950s attire. Participants attending the carnival are asked to enter the cafeteria near the pool doors.
FHS senior Rachel Weiland, who plays Sandy, said she looks forward to meeting families during the carnival. The 17-year-old said she decided to step out of her comfort zone and audition for the musical because she loves singing and her friends planned to be involved in the production.
Sophomore Parker Newman said he joined the cast as a way to continue the fun he’s had in previous years. He said one of the challenges of playing his character, Danny Zuko, was singing closely with Weiland and learning how to pretend to be in a relationship.
Newman said he hopes the audiences see that people from all backgrounds can come together and produce a good show.
The cast also includes Rachel Pierce as Rizzo, Holly Huffman as Kenickie, Blake Jonassen as Doody, Liorah Peoples as Frenchy, Isabelle Freeland as Jan, Trevor Mosher as Sonny, Mychal VanAllsburg as Roger and Mercadies Brown as Marty.
