SL bands receive top ratings

• Mar 17, 2018 at 11:30 AM

The Spring Lake Public Schools bands, under the direction of Michael Truszkowski and Mark Grevengoed, turned in outstanding performances at the district band festival March 1 at Grand Haven High School.

All four bands — seventh grade, eighth grade, and the high school’s concert and symphonic — received straight First Division ratings on the stage and in sight-reading.

“We are so pleased that all of our concert ensembles played so well and musically again this year at the MSBOA festival,” Grevengoed said. “The work ethic of our students at each level has paid off in straight 1’s at band festival for the past four years. We’re incredibly proud of our fine students as musicians and as people as they represent the tradition of excellence that we have in the Spring Lake band and community.

“We’re also grateful for Grand Haven High School, their entire music staff and the wonderful parents that helped make the Grand Haven site a great place to perform,” he added.

On Sunday, March 18, all Spring Lake bands will combine for FUNdJam! — a mass band concert at the Spring Lake High School gymnasium. Each concert band and both jazz bands in grades 5-12 will perform. The concert will end with a combined band of more than 450 students performing Michael Sweeney’s “Shorewood Overture” and the Spring Lake school song.

The third annual FUNdJam! is a fundraiser for the Spring Lake Band Backers. It will also include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and Pronto Pups for sale. The doors open at 1 p.m. and the performances start at 2:25 p.m. Admission is by a suggested donation of $5 per person.
