CG Picnic takes shape

The annual event features a vintage car show, Dee Jay the Clown, children's games and a performance by the Prevailing Winds Community Band. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit will conduct demonstrations and Michele's Rescue will offer pets for adoption.
New this year is Ballet Folklorica Sol Azteca, a Mexican dance troupe based in Holland; and a petting zoo provided by Mary's Country Critters of Wayland.
“The petting zoo is phenomenal,” said event organizer Regina Sjoberg. “It is USDA-licensed, veterinary-certified and insured. It is self-contained and includes a donkey, miniature horse, a goat, a sheep, a potbellied pig, a rabbit and a chicken. The kids can actually touch these animals and also learn a bit about their habits.”
Boy Scout Troop 37, led by Mark and Linda Trier, will provide the food and host the children's games.
“This is my second year hosting the picnic, and I am thrilled that Mark and Linda are asking their young men to help us out again this year,” said Sjoberg, a member of Ferrysburg City Council. “The boys had fun (last year) and did an outstanding job of leading the games and feeding the guests.”
The event takes place from 1-4 p.m. Although it honors Coast Guard families, the public is welcome to attend. A meal of hot dog, chips and soda is $3.50.
“We really tried to focus on family entertainment last year and we have stepped that up a notch for 2013,” Sjoberg said.
