SL Heritage Fest kicks off Monday

Besides fan favorites like family fun night, a chicken wing cook-off and Highland games, the festival is rolling in some old-time rock and roll with Lookin' Back, a Bob Seger Tribute band from Detroit.

Lookin' Back will headline Saturday night's entertainment leading up to the 10:15 fireworks show.

“We're hoping this quality of entertainment helps us draw from farther out — farther north than Muskegon and farther south than West Olive,” festival spokeswoman Michele Yasenak said. “It should be a great show.”

Also new this year is a Flag Day ceremony Saturday at Mill Point Park. The noon gathering will feature a flagpole dedication and flags from the five service branches — Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard.

The festival launches Monday with a flea market at Harvest Bible Chapel’s parking lot from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The market continues Tuesday, along with Winsor McCay Day workshops at the Spring Lake District Library at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

McCay, a famous animation artist who inspired Walt Disney, grew up in Spring Lake.

Tuesday also features a 6:30 p.m. dog walk at Central Park, with proceeds going to Heaven Can Wait, a no-kill rescue facility. There will also be a 7 p.m. historical walk beginning at Village Hall.

Wednesday, the family fun flows from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Mill Point Park with a hot dog roast, ice cream social, inflatable rides, horseback riding, kids games and more.

Thursday is dedicated to the experienced crowd with 9:30 a.m. bingo and a 6 p.m. senior swing dance at the Holiday Inn.

The day’s lineup also includes a festival favorite — the Wings on the Water chicken wing contest from 5-9 p.m. at Mill Point Park.

Flash forward to Friday for a 9 a.m. pickleball tournament at Central Park and a car show from 5-9 p.m. at Spring Lake Wesleyan Church.

An entertainment tent with music by Tight Fit runs from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at Mill Point Park.

Saturday's agenda is a festival in itself:

*8 a.m. — 5k run/walk at Central Park

*8-11 a.m. — Pancake breakfast at Barber School

*8 a.m. — Pickleball tournament at Spring Lake Middle School

*10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Highland games at Central Park
