Sparrow spars

The third day of the Michigan Pirate Festival kicked off with “Sparring with Sparrow and Friends” at Loutit District Library. The sparring event gave kids a chance to drop their manners, pick up a sword and fight like a true scallywag.

Sparrow’s friends ducked, dodged and weaved around the kids’ swords slicing through the air, occasionally yelling out, “Yee got me leg!” Jackie Sparrow, clad in Jack Sparrow’s wardrobe look from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” jumped into fights around the room as the kids got more and more feisty.

Mikey Fuller, 6, donned a skull-and-sword bandana to match the rest of his pirate attire. Mikey and his sister, 7-year-old Anika Fuller, said they loved the event so much that they’re already planning on more sword battling this week.

Mikey said his favorite part of the day was “when I snuck up on Sparrow.”

“I got him!” Mikey said as he grasped his plastic sword and waved it in the air.

Another little pirate named “Stitcherz” stood at the front of the room and challenged his opponents with confidence that has come from a long line of pirates.

“He’s been doing this since he was in the womb,” said the pirate boy’s grandmother, Sharon Smith.

Stitcherz is actually Eli Larson, a 6-year-old whose mother and grandmother have been involved with the Michigan Pirate Festival since it began.
