Parental abduction thwarted with Sparta man's arrest

COOPERSVILLE — Police say a 34-year-old Sparta man is in the Ottawa County Jail after assaulting his estranged wife in her Coopersville apartment and taking off with their 16-month-old daughter early Monday morning.

The man will likely be arraigned on charges of domestic assault, parental kidnapping and the violation of a personal protection order, said Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded at about 5:40 a.m. Monday to 141 Main St. in Coopersville, after the 24-year-old victim reported her estranged husband broke into her apartment and attempted to strangle her. Bennett said the woman was able to break free, but the man took their daughter and fled.

While officials were in the process of sending out an Amber Alert, Kent County Sheriff’s deputies located the man and child at a Sparta residence. The child was unharmed, Bennett said, and the Amber Alert was never initiated.

Bennett said the victim was treated at Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids for non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives were planning to meet with prosecutors to formalize the charges.
