Rebecca Kunst, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
Jason Lou, a 19-year-old exchange student from China, was a front-seat passenger in Kunst’s car. Lou was wearing a seat belt. He was transported after the crash to Spectrum Health of Grand Rapids in critical condition.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Kunst was traveling south on 36th Avenue in Georgetown Township at 8:10 a.m. when she lost control of her 1998 Toyota Corolla and it slid sideways across the centerline and crossed into oncoming traffic, north of Port Sheldon Street in Georgetown Township.
A second vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 65-year-old Stephanie Thomas, also of Hudsonville, was traveling north and struck Kunst’s vehicle in the rear passenger side, causing it to bounce off and strike a guardrail, according to the sheriff’s office. Thomas said the Corolla was sliding out of control and she could not avoid the collision.
Both Thomas and her 19-year-old passenger, Qinkai Zhang, were not injured in the crash. Both were wearing seat belts, police said.
The roadway at the time was “lightly dusted” with snow, said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Sheriff’s Department.
