  • A child died from injuries suffered Sunday afternoon when she was struck by a vehicle in Zeeland Township.
Sgt. Steve Austin, of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, said preliminary investigation showed that the Makenna Fraaza darted across 64th Avenue just north of Quincy Street in Zeeland Township at about 3:30 p.m. when she was struck by a Jeep Sport. The driver of the vehicle, 61-year-old Hugh Claver, attempted to apply his brakes and swerved, but was unable to avoid hitting the girl.
Police did not disclose why the child was in the roadway, but did say in a news release that the child "was with her mother and friends standing on the opposite side of the road when the collision occurred."
The child was taken by ambulance to Helen Devos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, where she died a short time later.
Austin said neither speed nor alcohol appear to be a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
