NORTH MUSKEGON — A pickup truck sunk below the ice on Muskegon Lake after the driver tried joyriding across the frozen lake Monday, Jan. 15.

The man attempted to drive on Muskegon Lake from 2nd Street in North Muskegon to the Muskegon Conservation Club.

His truck didn't make it across — it got stuck and ended up sinking below Muskegon Lake's unpredictable layer of ice. The man was able to exit the truck and get to shore on his own.

He then reported what happened to the North Muskegon Fire Department.

Authorities say the man was cold but not injured.

The truck was eventually removed Monday night after several hours of work. Eagle Towing came prepared with a scuba suit and plenty of straps to hook up to the truck. One strap broke in the process.

They needed to cut the ice with a saw before they could pull the truck out. They were able to pull it out around 9 p.m.

According to authorities, he could face some tickets and the Department of Natural Resources has been notified. While alcohol has not been indicated as a factor in the incident, there were several beer cans inside the cab.
