The Grand Haven/Spring Lake co-op hockey team took on rival Mona Shores at home Friday night, blowing past the Sailors for a 5-1 victory.
Trevor Kalis struck first, assisted by Cooper Fox in the first period. The Bucs’ 1-0 led would hold into the third period, where the game heated up.
Mona Shores netted the tying goal early in the final period before Grand Haven caught fire. With four minutes left to play, Austin Fox scored with an assist from brother Cooper. One minute later, T.J. Cunningham scored unassisted. Trevor Kalis found the net another minute later, assisted by Fox and Brad Robertson. Finally, in the final minute of play, Fox capped the game with a goal of his own.
The Bucs move to 8-7-4 and return to the ice in Chelsea next weekend for the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase.
WMC boys rally past rivals
The Western Michigan Christian boys basketball team used a 19-9 fourth quarter to score a 45-34 rivalry win over Muskegon Catholic Central on the road Friday night.
The Crusaders took an 11-8 lead into the first break before the Warriors took a 19-17 halftime lead and a 26-25 lead heading into the final frame.
Tyler VanBeek and Brant Zeerip led WMC with nine points each with Zeerip’s coming exclusively on three-pointers. Zach Butkis chipped in with seven points.
The victory improves the Warriors to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the Lakes Eight.
Junior varsity: WMC defeated Muskegon Catholic, 51-9. Zach Foreman led the way with 13 points followed by Michael Kamps with 11 and Brad Folkema with eight.
WMC girls stay perfect
The Western Michigan Christian girls basketball team remained unbeaten in Lakes Eight play with a 60-36 victory over rival Muskegon Catholic Central on Friday.
The Warriors went on a 12-2 run to break open a one-point 27-26 halftime lead and dominated the game from there.
Aubrey Goorman led WMC with 20 points followed by Madison Heiss with 10 and Anna Sytsema with nine.
FCC downs Holland Calvary
The Fruitport Calvary Christian girls basketball team picked up another Alliance League victory Friday night with a 53-12 victory over Holland Calvary on the road.
The Eagles took a 13-0 lead into the first break, before adding 26 points in the second quarter for a 39-0 halftime lead and secure the win.
Kelsey Richards led FCC with 19 points and five assists, ahead of Lizzie Cammenga with 14 points. Brionna Johnson tallied 12 points and 20 rebounds, while Emily Wesner added eight points and Kristina Warren dished out seven assists.
The Eagles return to the court Tuesday at 5:30 to take on Holland Black River in an Alliance League deciding matchup.
Fruitport boys fall to Muskegon
The Fruitport boys basketball team took a tough loss to O-K Black Conference foe Muskegon on the road Friday night, 78-23.
The Big Reds led 14-5 after the first quarter, 45-10 at halftime and 57-21 heading into the final period.
Cam Oleen led the Trojans with eight points, while Hunter Hannon added five.
Fruitport girls trounced by Big Reds
The Fruitport girls basketball team took on Muskegon on Friday, falling by a final score of 75-23.
Sydney Bol led the Trojans with 10 points and six rebounds, while Emily Dirske added nine points and Izzy Raven dished out four assists and grabbed three steals.
