MUSKEGON — A 15-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot by a Muskegon police officer on Friday afternoon.

Officers were responding to a domestic violence call at Carriage House, which is located near the corner of Oak Avenue and Quarterline Road, when the shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m.

Muskegon police said when officers arrived, the girl was armed with a knife and other sharp objects and was attempting to attack a 16-year-old Muskegon boy. That is when an officer shot her once in the lower leg.

Muskegon Police Chief Jeffrey Lewis said the girl, a Muskegon Heights resident, has non-life-threatening injuries to her lower extremities.

Officers have recovered knives they say belonged to the girl at the location of the shooting.

Lewis said the state police are taking over the investigation, and the officer who fired the shots is on paid administrative leave.
