GRAND HAVEN TWP. — A two-car crash on U.S. 31 at Comstock Street slowed southbound traffic to a crawl for about a half-hour Wednesday afternoon.

Police said a Muskegon man told them he looked down to find something while driving south on the highway at about 1:30 p.m., and when he looked back up the traffic signal at Comstock had turned red. Donnie Sprague, 57, said there was a vehicle stopped ahead of his car and he was unable to avoid colliding with it.

Katherine Harden, 77, told police that she had to stop quickly when the light turned red. The Grand Haven woman said she looked in the rear-view mirror and saw Sprague’s vehicle just before it rear-ended her car.

Harden complained of back pain after the crash, “and was possibly unconscious for a minute,” said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. However, she refused transport to the hospital, Austin said.

The scene was cleaned up shortly after 2 p.m.
