HOLLAND — Police said Justin Demario Mason, 21, is in custody after a shooting and attempted robbery in Holland Heights this week.

Mason has been charged with three felonies: two counts of assault with intent to rob while armed and one count of being in possession of a firearm while attempting to commit a felony. He faces up to life in prison if convicted of the assault charges and a mandatory two years in prison if convicted of the possession of a firearm charge.

Bail was set at $750,000 cash.

Just before noon Wednesday, a 25-year-old man was sitting in his car with a passenger in the 300 block of Stratford Way when they were approached by a black male, age 18-22 with dreadlocked hair, according to the police report. The suspect demanded items from the 25-year-old, then shot him in the chest with a handgun.

The victim then drove himself to Holland Hospital, where law enforcement was contacted.

The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Holland Hospital spokesman Tim Breed said the victim was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Mason's next court date is a probable cause conference scheduled for April 10. He is currently being held in the Ottawa County jail.

Those with information are asked to call the Holland Department of Public Safety at 616-355-1100 or email investigators at policetips@cityofholland.com.
