Child hurt in accidental shooting

JAMESTOWN TWP. — An 11-year-old girl was in good condition after being struck by a bullet while playing in a backyard early Saturday evening.

The girl, whose name was not released, was taken by her parents to St. Mary’s Hospital following the 6:30 p.m. incident which occurred in the 1400 block of Angling Road.

The girl was transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, where doctors confirmed she had a bullet in her upper body, said Sgt. Jay Douglas of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses helped police find some people nearby who had been target shooting at the time.

Police determined that one of the bullets had missed the backstop and struck the girl.

Several weapons were seized and everyone involved was being cooperative, Douglas said.

The incident is still under investigation.
