Police said a Hudsonville man was struck while riding his bicycle across a Holland Township intersection at 12:43 p.m.
John Cook, 28, was riding his bike east on Lakewood Boulevard when he was struck by a 2004 Toyota Highlander driven by 17-year-old Lauren Jongearyg of Holland as she attempted to turn right from southbound Beeline Road onto westbound Lakewood, said Sgt. David VanderPloeg of the Sheriff’s Office. Jongearyg did not stop for a red light at the intersection and was pulling her vehicle forward to make the turn when her SUV hit Cook.
The crash initiated a call for emergency responders.
As traffic began to back up on Lakewood Boulevard, police said a 29-year-old Holland woman attempted to drive out of the jam by making a U-turn. However, she failed to see a marked patrol car with its lights activated traveling west on Lakewood in the center turn lane that was responding to the car-bicyclist incident, and the two vehicles collided, VanderPloeg said.
The deputy and the Holland woman were injured in the crash, but their injuries — as well as Cook’s — were not life-threatening. All three were transported by ambulance to Holland Hospital.
VanderPloeg said Jongearyg was not injured.
