A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Muskegon rescued a boater near Saugatuck on Sunday.

Watchstanders from the Coast Guard’s Sector Lake Michigan received a “mayday” call over VHF-FM channel 16 of a male voice asking if anyone can hear him. After conducting call-outs with negative results, Sector Lake Michigan received a notification from Coast Guard Station Grand Haven relaying a report from a woman whose husband had not returned home from the night before.

Boat crews launched from Station Holland and Station St. Joseph and requested a launch of a helicopter crew.

Coast Guard crews searched the area after generating a position from a cellphone ping. Sector Lake Michigan eventually made contact with the man by cellphone, and he confirmed that he was in distress.

Upon arriving on the scene, the helicopter crew hoisted the man and transported him to Muskegon, where he was reported to be in good condition.

The Station St. Joseph 45-foot response boat-medium crew towed the man’s 21-foot vessel to South Haven.
