Micah Hammond, 12, was the only standing during the annual Winterfest Family Dog Pull held Saturday morning at Mulligan’s Hollow.
“We did this last year,” Hammond said, after Ziggy pulled him down the course to his parents, Cecil and Shelly Hammond.
Event sponsor Kevin Tuuk of City Farmer said 26 dogs competed in the event, which is pretty close to the average number of participants.
But the crowds were the biggest Tuuk has ever seen.
“I estimate we had a goo 500-600 people,” he said. “They were surrounding the whole thing. I’ve never had that before.
Tuuk agreed that temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s probably helped the attendance, as did the presence of Grand Haven Public Safety’s K9 officer.
Officer Justin Canan and his partner Max, put on a demonstration with the help of GHDPS Lt. Joe Boyle. The lieutenant played the part of the suspect.
“It was cool for everybody to watch what he can do,” Tuuk said.
