The new, modern sign reads “Welkom to Holland” — and is a tall, modern steel column.
The sign originally was going to replace the wooden “Welkom to downtown Holland” at the Amtrak Station on Eighth Street, but community backlash to the idea caused Holland City Council to take a second look at the signs.
The wooden sign at the Amtrak station will stay, and some of the other signs may be repurposed in places throughout the city like Windmill Island Gardens, the triangle park between State Street and Central Avenue.
City staff are working on a plan to refurbish some of the old wooden signs.
The four new gateway signs cost $29,680.
