Gerrit Blok, a 30-year employee with Dan Vos Construction out of Ada, suffered a serious head injury and possible broken bones in the fall, said Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department. It happened shortly after 8 a.m. at the Perrigo Co. facility at 13295 Reflections Drive.
Blok was working on a second-floor opening to the elevator shaft and was secured with a harness. Shortly after the job was completed, Blok removed the harness and attempted to retrieve a ladder from the shaft opening when he fell about 22 feet to the bottom, Ruster said.
Fellow employees called 911 and reported Blok was unconscious. They performed CPR until paramedics arrived, according to reports.
Blok was transported first to Holland Hospital and then airlifted by helicopter to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids. His injuries are considered life threatening, Ruster said.
Arthur Shannon, vice president of investor relations and global communications for Perrigo, said Blok was a contracted employee. Shannon said the company did not have any additional comment at this time.
