A squirrel is to blame for an outage that took out power to Grand Haven’s downtown and east side Saturday morning.

Grand Haven Board of Light & Power spokeswoman Renee Molyneux said the squirrel caused a transformer to blow at the substation at the power plant on Harbor Island at 9:19 a.m.

Approximately 3,650 customers were affected by the outage.

Power was restored just under an hour later when BLP crews repaired the transformer.

“A squirrel can take down the whole city if they get into the right place,” Molyneux said.
