John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids was crowded Sunday, one of the warmest days so far this spring. Spring Lake High School graduate and Grand Valley State University student Erin Vargo said people were lining the chimpanzee exhibit wall to wall in the afternoon.
“Many people were taunting this particular male chimp, who was visibly aggravated by all of this,” said the former zoo employee. “I recognized the signs of distress from when I worked with them previously.”
Vargo said she began recording as soon as the chimpanzee picked up the poop.
“Chimps have very good underhand aim and he threw it at a group of people who were taunting him,” she said. “However, they ducked and it landed smack-dab on an innocent elderly woman’s face.”
On the video, you can hear someone exclaim, “It got Grandma.”
The woman turns toward the camera and you can see the glob covering her nose.
There is a short, glass wall at the top of the wall surrounding the chimpanzee enclosure. The chimp threw the excrement up over the walls, where it came down and landed on the woman’s face.
As of late Monday afternoon, Vargo’s Facebook post of the video showed more than 92,000 views and 1,765 shares.
Vargo’s boyfriend, Jacob Mitchell, who also witnessed the incident, posted the video on YouTube, where it had been viewed nearly 500,000 times by Monday evening. It has also been reposted on YouTube by many other channels.
