More parking coming to Mulligan's Hollow

More parking spaces are on the way for the city’s Mulligan’s Hollow Recreation Area.

Grand Haven City Council has approved a $62,900 contract with Abonmarche Consultants Inc. of Benton Harbor for the design, construction administration and construction close-out services related to the planned parking lot at the recreation area adjacent to the Tri-Cities Family YMCA.

“This is for the grant application we put in to basically put a parking lot where the diesel tanks came out, and make some other improvements,” City Manager Pat McGinnis said. “We're very excited to get started.”

The city received a $280,000 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund earlier this year. That, along with a $202,700 local match, will be used to build the new parking area over the former Board of Light & Power fuel storage tank site. It’s estimated that more than 100 spaces will be added at the site.

New trash and recycle bins, signage for spaces and pavement markings, new lighting, light landscaping, and a pedestrian access path are also planned for the site.

The old diesel storage tanks were removed several years ago.

“It should just be paving the area where the diesel tanks came out and making a bunch of pedestrian improvements in there,” McGinnis said.

The parking lot project is shown as a priority in the city’s 2015-19 Explore the Grand Region Parks and Recreation Plan.

McGinnis said city officials plan is to sit down with both the Tri-Cities Families YMCA and Ski Bowl leaders to discuss concepts for the parking lot and to make sure everyone is on the same page.

“After we get the conceptual stuff done, Abonmarche will get started with design,” McGinnis said. “Hopefully, next spring we'll be ready to start work up there and get that done for next summer's season.”
