25 deer harvested during city's cull

The Tribune has obtained details about the City of Grand Haven’s deer management efforts this past fall.

“We safely and successfully conducted a deer management project,” said Vester Davis, assistant to the city manager. “City Council has been informed (of the results).”

According to Davis, two events took place in the city in late 2017: one occurred on Oct. 18 and the other on Nov. 7. In all, 25 deer were culled as a part of the process, he said.

“Approximately 740 pounds was split between two local food pantries,” Davis said of the meat obtained from the cull.

The cull was the result of a September 2017 City Council decision to approve a $6,460 contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The cull was approved by a 3-2 vote. Councilmen Bob Monetza and Mike Fritz voted against the agreement.

The decision followed action taken by council in March 2017 to forgo any deer cull activity as permitted by a previously issued Michigan Department of Natural Resources permit. Council voted to reapply to the state to kill up to 30 deer during the state’s designated deer hunting season in the fall.

In August, in response to the new application, the DNR issued a new Damage and Nuisance Control Permit based on the March request. The permit was valid from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, and allowed the city to shoot as many as 25 deer within city limits.

Authorized locations for the activity included the airport, Mulligan's Hollow, Harbor Island and other city-controlled properties.

Davis said that $7,812.80 has been spent on deer management efforts during the past year.
