The Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity and the Markatos family are preparing for the fifth annual Scramblin’ for Charity Kelly Markatos Memorial Golf Outing, which is slated for July 13 at the Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck.
Organizers aim to raise $50,000 at this year’s event to build a habitat home.
Breakfast will begin at 7 a.m. and a shotgun start will take place at 9 a.m. There will be a catered lunch, raffle prizes and awards, which begin at 2 p.m.
The cost is $150, and the deadline to register is June 29. Registration can be found online at www.lakeshorehabitat.org.
Kelly Markatos was an intern for the Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity in 2013. After returning to Central Michigan University that fall, she unexpectedly died.
Her parents, John and Lori Markatos, created the annual event to help families in need and as a way of continuing their daughter’s “legacy of love,” said Stacey Korecki, development coordinator for the Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity.
EBW Electronics is the event sponsor for the fifth year. Korecki said they’ve also had golfers who have participated in the event every year.
In previous years, enough funds have been raised to build four habitat homes. In a press release, Alan Diaz, whose family received the first home, said it changed their lives.
“This changed my life and my children’s lives because now we have a secure environment and the kids have a backyard to play in,” Diaz said. “We have a place to call home.”
