Law Week events planned at Ottawa County Courthouse

Becky Vargo • Jul 21, 2015 at 10:53 AM

There will be programs on estate planning, landlord/tenant issues and foreclosure, according to Sherry VanBemmelen, assistant Friend of the Court and facilitator of the strategic planning team that created the county’s Legal Self-Help Center. There will also be classes on domestic violence, child custody and Friend of the Court, as well as misdemeanor versus felony, right to an attorney and search and seizure.

Another highlight of Law Week will be a mock trial by students from Corpus Christi Catholic School presided over by Judge Post.

This will be a murder trial run by the students, VanBemmelen said. The courtroom on the third floor will be filled with students and parents, but it also is open to the public, she said.

More information, including the complete class schedule, can be found on the county website, www.miottawa.org/CourtsLE/Legal/. Bios of the speakers are also on the website.

Law Day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 and the United States Congress designated it as an annual nationwide event in 1961.
