Grand Haven man survives deadly ordeal for Marines in Afghanistan

Lance Cpl. Anderson, 22, was assigned to combat duty as an infantryman with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, and deployed on a seven-month tour of Sangin, Afghanistan — a small community of 14,000 residents in the southern part of the country, and a hotbed for Taliban activity.

In the seven months Anderson was in Sangin, his battalion lost 25 Marines, and hundreds of others were wounded — mostly by IEDs (improvised explosive devices). 

Anderson said he is looking forward to the opportunity to pursue a new career. He knows he was fortunate during his time fighting the Taliban.
