SL middle schoolers raise $1,000 to fight liver disease

To raise the funds for the Grand Rapids hospital, 24 teachers at the school held a "penny war" in May, in which coins were worth different points and each class tried to get the most, Woodwyk said.
Another contest also involved students putting change in a jar; this time using their money to nominate the teachers who would take a pie in the face. The four teachers who got the most change in their jars took their lumps Friday afternoon in the soccer field as a crowd of kids watched.
