Winsor McCay Day starts off SL Heritage Festival Tuesday

“The library is going full force on Winsor McCay Day this year,” said Heritage Festival committee member Karla Constantine. “They’ve got a 'Family Feud' event with questions about Winsor McCay.”

McCay, a pioneer animation cartoonist who inspired Walt Disney, grew up in Spring Lake and attended Union School, which once stood on the parcel between Spring Lake Township Hall and the Spring Lake District Library.

The 19th-century cartoonist will be honored at the library on Tuesday with a 10:30 a.m. party, 2:30 p.m. cartooning workshop and 7 p.m. "Family Feud" contest. Contestant applications are available at the library, 123 E. Exchange St.

A dog walk is also planned for Tuesday, starting at 6 p.m. at Spring Lake's Central Park.

Family Fun Night returns from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mill Point Park. Events include a Lions Club community picnic, Harbor Humane Society adoptathon, ice cream social, and games and inflatables.

The inaugural Senior Art Mixer has more than 30 participants who will showcase their original works amidst beer-and-wine tasting at the Holiday Inn. Winners will be decided by public vote. The event is part of Thursday’s Senior Day, that includes bingo and lunch at the Holiday Inn, and a 1-3 p.m. ice cream social at the Little Red House, 331 E. Exchange St.

Other events include Thursday’s Wings on the Water; Friday’s car show; beer tents and live entertainment on Friday and Saturday; and a 5K run/walk, cemetery walk and fireworks finale on Saturday.

Also new this year is pickleball – a fast growing sport played with paddles on a scaled down tennis court. Eight-time Senior Olympics gold-medal winner Jimmy O’Hearn will lead pickleball demonstrations from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Central Park.

“I’ll have enough paddles for everyone,” said O’Hearn, who was named West Michigan’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2010 and won the Governor’s Fitness Award. “People are absolutely tickled with pickleball. It’s a real family thing.”
