Family Fun Night washed out

“We’re going to be doing all of the kids games, with the exception of the inflatables,” said Heritage Festival Committee member Karla Constantine.

Constantine said her crew decided about 4 p.m. Wednesday to suspend setting up and cancel Family Fun Night events. She said it’s the first time she remembers the popular annual event being canceled because of rain.

“I think this is a first,” Constantine said. “We’ve been watching the weather and kind of knew it was going to be ‘iffy.’ When it started raining about 1 (p.m.), and we saw no clearing coming, we suspected this would happen. This event is for little kids. How many moms and dads want to bring their kids out when it’s nasty and the ground is wet?

“It’s kind of a bummer, but you have to do what you have to do and move on,” she added.

Several of today’s Senior Day activities — including bingo, lunch and the Senior Art Mixer — will take place indoors at the Holiday Inn and should not be affected by weather.

Wings on the Water cannot be moved indoors, Constantine said, but a large tent will protect the crowd.

Organizers have ordered 11,200 wings for the sixth annual cookoff.

“Last year, we ran out, so we ordered 15 more boxes this year,” Constantine said. “Hopefully, everyone will come out and enjoy wings, and listen to music by Sweet Lou and the Savages. It should be a great event.”

Wings will cost 50 cents each. Diners can vote for their favorite wings and best decorated booth from eight contestants.
