“I’m overwhelmed and overjoyed,” said Beak, who has never owned a home. “Finally, the house is done. I could never have done this without my family. I wanted to quit a few times.”
Beak, a full-time baker at the Grand Haven Walmart, contributed 250 hours of sweat equity toward the 1,080-square-foot home. She would work days then spend several hours working at the home site.
She often wouldn’t get to bed until after 10 p.m.
“It was a lot of hard work and it wasn’t easy,” said Beak, while her sons, Marcus, 7 and Michael, 5, munched on cake on the front porch. “I was ready to give up a few times. If it wasn’t for my family, this never would have happened. We’re a close family and they’ve been so supportive.”
