GHAPS school board adopts budget, avoids teacher layoffs

Some remaining teachers were reassigned to different classes, Bylenga said.

“By doing that we were able to put all the teachers into a spot, so we didn’t have to lay off in the professional side,” she said.

Cuts were made in other areas, including the layoff of at least one member of the district support staff and the reduction of hours for some of the others, Bylenga said.

The school’s discretionary budget was also cut by 10 percent.

Due to funding cuts, the district will also spend $3.4 million out of its fund balance. This will reduce the balance to slightly more than $5.4 million, or 8.8 percent of the district’s expenditures. While it’s not unusual for the district to spend money left over from last year, Bylenga said the district has never had to spend such a large amount.
