Donors needed for local blood drives this summer

Anonymous • Jul 21, 2015 at 10:59 AM

The supply of type O negative blood at the American Red Cross has dropped to critically low levels. Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations. Donors are needed now to help prevent the blood supply from declining further.

The Red Cross is also experiencing an urgent need for blood donors with A and B negative blood types as well.

In an effort to help increase donor turnout, the Red Cross has partnered with Meijer to offer every person who comes out to donate, the chance to win free groceries ($250 value). In addition, everyone who comes out to donate also has a chance to win $125 in gas from Meijer and a $500 Best Buy gift card.

Following is a list of American Red Cross blood drives in the area through July 31:

• July 8, noon to 5:45 p.m. — Second Christian Reformed Church, 2021 Sheldon Road, Grand Haven

• July 17, 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. — St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 406 E. Savidge St., Spring Lake

• July 19, 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. — Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave.
