Fire pact stalled by Spring Lake Township Board tie vote

Township attorney Ron Bultje said it would be acceptable to bring the issue up for another vote in the near future because there was “no prevailing side” in Monday’s decision.

Township trustees Ron Lindquist, Bob Shay and Judy Miljan cast the dissenting votes.

Lindquist said he would be more comfortable if the village paid about $50,000 per year.

“Why should we subsidize the village?” he asked. “They’ve been getting a free ride at the expense of township taxpayers for 35 years. I think it’s time to stop.”

Shay said he calculated that $150,000 would be a more fair payment.

Representatives from both municipalities have been meeting for more than six months to research the history and validity of the original fire service contract, which dates back to 1976 when the village dissolved its own fire department and merged services with the township.
