The Alliance for the Great Lakes is teaming up with Barefoot Wine for this Adopt-a-Beach event. The wine company is co-sponsoring a total of 18 beach cleanups in the program’s six-state region, including five in Michigan.

The Alliance’s Jamie Cross said more than 40 volunteers picked up 85 pounds of debris at the Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon on July 16, which also was a Barefoot Wine event. That trash included 2,285 cigarette butts.

“Smoking debris is the No. 1 item we find on Great Lakes beaches,” Cross said.

Last year, more than 10,000 Adopt-a-Beach volunteers removed 31,295 pounds of debris at 292 locations along the Great Lakes shorelines in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Cross said the debris picked up Tuesday night will be part of the Alliance’s data collection, which is shared with officials to make decisions on beach health and ecology, and enforcement issues like smoking bans.
